Barracks House

Thrive Architects have provided architecture, urban design and visualistion services for this interesting scheme; also preparing supporting information including a Design and Access Statement, elevations and floor plans. We prepared a 3D sketchup model to create views of the site to assess the impact of the new development on surrounding buildings and former parade ground.

Close liaison with West Dorset District Council helped to shape the proposals, which include a new L shaped building that has been carefully positioned to minimise its impact on the Little Keep. The design and details have been inspired by the surrounding Quartermaster’s Store and Head Post Office, including typical elements of military architecture such as the iron walkways used along the front elevation. The area fronting the Little Keep has also been re-designed, strengthening the existing landscape and defining a clear separation between areas.

Due to previous work done on the nearby Vespasian House, Thrive Architects had detailed knowledge of the site which was key to ensure that Barracks House could become part of a wider renovation of this former military site.

The aim now is to move forward with the next stage of the project, which is hoped to start in the New Year!
