Portland
In collaboration with KOORI Limited, Thrive submitted a bid for May Bower Gardens, the former Sweethill Primary School on Portland Bill, arranged by Homes England.
Their successful bid was attributed to being a Dorset-based SME (Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise) with in-depth knowledge of the local market, local businesses, and the people they employ for their developments.
The development has good connections to Southwell Village in the southern part of the Isle of Portland. The site is nestled between the iconic Portland Bill to the south, the picturesque villages of Easton and Weston to the north, and Chesil Beach, which is part of the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), to the west.
The proposal for 48 residential units is designed to enhance connections for both residents and visitors to local services, as well as to the community-inspired ‘Ecological Garden’ at the heart of the development. As Portland offers sustainable working and living, the approach to the scheme provides high quality housing that will encourage local people to stay and invest in the local area, with some of the houses being acquired by the local Community Land Trust and 25% affordable rent units.
Key features of the proposal respects and reflects the existing built character and the materials and hues of the distinctive landscape. The proposed elevations for the development combines traditional form with a contemporary appearance, aiming to harmonize with the 1970’s houses in the area while using local materials and modern details.
In summary, the May Bower Gardens project by Thrive Architects is a harmonious blend of modern living and the natural landscape, enhancing the overall character of Southwell while addressing the needs of its community.
