North Street Wareham is a small but complex development of 9 new homes in a sensitive riverside location. This brownfield development sees the regeneration of a former gasworks and the conversion and restoration of the former Toll House, repairing and improving this part of North Street on the northern gateway into Wareham and providing a carefully considered development of family housing in a sustainable location.
The layout creates a gently curving crescent of dwellings with views over the River Piddle, with the existing Toll House building providing a focal point on North Street. The landscape design is a vital part of the success of the regeneration of this site. In collaboration with LT Studio, careful consideration has been given to the landscape design, protecting key natural features and access to the riverbank, whilst also providing garden space and a free-flowing shared surface street. The combination of landscape and architecture is key to the sensitive approach and successful placemaking.
The architecture reflects some of the key design features and materials of its built context. However, due to its visual separation from the rest of the conservation area and the discreet nature of the site it is important for the development to establish its own character and identity. The design principles used to establish this site will result in the creation of a development of its time. In conclusion, this sensitive regeneration will breathe new life into a derelict site, improve the northern gateway into Wareham, creating an attractive new piece of townscape within the conservation area and a successful place to live.
